Ways to Save on Rental Cars

Renting a car can be a convenient way to get around, whether you’re on a trip with your family or friends, traveling for business or enjoying a relaxing vacation. But the costs can add up. Follow these tips to help you save the next time you rent a car.

Compare to get the best price

Before you choose a car rental company and pickup location, know that prices can vary widely across vendors and locations — even for the same vehicles. Some travel sites, like Citi Travel®, allow you to compare prices before you select a rental car, helping you assess the cost of picking one car over another before your trip.

Book in advance

Car rental prices typically increase as the pickup date approaches. Booking early may give you access to better rates and a wider selection of vehicles.

Rent outside of the airport

Picking up your rental car directly at the airport can be a seamless way to travel, but it may also be more expensive. Rental car companies pay to have their businesses directly at the airport, so the costs can be higher. Consider renting your car at another pickup location or rental lot.

Choose a different car type

Selecting a less expensive type of car — like a compact or economy car over a luxury or SUV model — can be another useful way to save on your rental costs. Of course, consider your needs when making this decision, such as whether you are traveling with family or friends, need a car seat or are traveling with a lot of luggage or equipment. But if you can opt for a smaller car with fewer add-ons, you may be able to save on rental costs.

Be mindful of rental fees

Being attentive to fees and adhering to your rental agreement can be another way to avoid unnecessary costs when renting a car. Some rental companies may include fees like an early return fee (if you return the car earlier than expected and outlined in your rental agreement), a late return fee (if you return the car past when your agreement specifies it should be back), a lost key fee and cancellation fees if you don’t cancel within a set window. Add-ons, like car seats, GPS or additional drivers can come with fees, too.

Check for discounts

Double-check for discounts through memberships or affiliations, such as schools, employers, big-box stores or groups like AAA and AARP. Rental car companies often have their own loyalty programs, as well, and some may be partnered with airlines, hotels or travel groups that you already use.

Refuel before returning the car

Perhaps one of the simplest money-saving tips is to refuel the rental car before you return it. Some rental agencies may charge a refueling fee. You may also be charged if you don’t top off the gas tank, don’t have a receipt showing you refueled the car within a certain distance of the return location or return the car at a lower fuel level than when you picked it up. Rental car agencies may charge more to refuel a car than a gas station would. Check your rental agreement to understand any stipulations about fuel.

Enjoy the ride

Renting a car doesn’t have to wreck your budget. By planning ahead, comparing prices, skipping unnecessary extras and taking advantage of discounts, you can keep more money in your pocket while still enjoying the freedom of the open road.
