How Can You Keep Your AAdvantage® Miles From Expiring?

To keep their miles from expiring, AAdvantage® members must earn or redeem miles at least once every 24 months or be the primary accountholder for an AAdvantage® credit card such as the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard®.

Members who are under 21 and have an account profile with a valid birth date are excluded from the 24-month activity rule.

Let’s look at a few ways to keep AAdvantage® miles from expiring.

Earn miles

There are plenty of ways to earn miles. AAdvantage® members can earn miles on qualifying travel, including certain flights booked directly through aa.com or a partner airline site. Using your AAdvantage® credit card, like the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive Mastercard®, lets you earn miles on eligible purchases.

Other ways to earn miles include partner offers, AAdvantage® eShopping and AAdvantage® Dining. Members can also join SimplyMiles®, activate offers and earn miles by shopping through the site

Have an AAdvantage® credit card

Having an AAdvantage® credit card, such as the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Card, not only allows you to earn miles with every purchase but can keep your miles from expiring. Primary cardholders of AAdvantage® credit cards are not subject to the 24-month rule as long as their card account is open.

Redeem miles

You can keep your points from expiring by booking a flight, travel or experience with miles on aa.com.

Transfer miles

Members can transfer miles to a different account to keep them from expiring.
